Wage Review Committee Hearings Well Attended
On October 22nd and 23rd, Councilman Ricky Burgess held two Wage Review Committee hearings to address the issue of low and/or stagnating wages at major health institutions in the city of Pittsburgh. The Wage Review Committee is one component of Councilman Burgess and Councilman Dan Lavelle’s ‘A Liveable City For All’ agenda which aims to improve the quality of life for low to moderate income citizens of Pittsburgh. The committee includes a cross section of elected officials, city representatives, health economists, community activists, and low-wage workers. The hearings, which attracted over 150 speakers, were held in Oakland and the North Side. The meeting rooms were often at full capacity and featured a large turnout of workers from the nearby health institutions. Speakers included City Controller Michael Lamb, representatives from local environmental groups, organized labor, transportation advocates and citizens with testimony regarding the effect of low wages on residents and communities in our city. One of the next steps for the committee will be the creation of a report detailing the economic impact of low wages on the future of the region, which will be submitted to City Council for review and acceptance. For more information on city legislation, please contact PCRG's Director of External Relations and Member Engagement, Majestic Lane, or 412-391-6732 ext. 214.
